Needle stash

LOVE the addis, HATE the birch, tolerate everything in between. I guess I need to come up with some sort of storage system other than the packets they came in, but I am yet to find anything that will store all of them in as small a space and make them easy to identify. can you believe the the size of those honking great straights in the middle? I bought them to knit a scarf with the Rowan Big Wool that Froggy sent me, but I am finding it hard to imagine actually using them.

Very cool to see, you know, I finally put all of my circs into an accordian file system, and it works really well. I have a slot for each of the sizes and can fit at least two of each size in a slot…I’ll have to take a picture of it. My straights I have no system for and am with you on finding a different way to store them. Some day I’ll get crafty enough to make a roll case out of a placemat or table runner or whatever else I have seen people whip up beautiful needle holders out of!

Okay, you are channelling my thoughts. Just the other day I told another knitting blogger over email that we should start showing our needle collection. It has way more embarrassment potential than showing our yarn stash. Because really, when one realizes they have 4 sets of addi turbo circulars size U.S. 1, one really needs to admit they have a problem.

I recently ordered a couple of these to store my needles in. They seem on the pricey side, but they do make storage of needles less complicated and much more size-efficient:

Wow- that is a lot of needles. I don’t have nearly that many.

I made myself a circ/dpn case, that seems to work really well. My straights case needs some works though.

And it would appear that I have not taken a picture of it! It was pretty easy tho. I will put a pic on my blog.

Lovely needle collection! When I first started knitting, I bought a lot of random needles off ebay (one of those, “my granny died, and I don’t know what all this stuff is, but I’ll throw it in a box and ship it to you” - fantastic deals!) and I ended up with so many I didn’t know what to do with them. I ended up sewing a circular needle holder for them (inspired by the one in Stitch ‘n’ Bitch, but it hangs on the wall and there are labeled slots across the top for dpns) All my straight needles live in various flower vases - they’re loosely sorted by size and length, but I really like my how the top of my bookcase has “needle bouquets” all across it.

I recently found myself in the situation where I needed to better organize my growing supply of needles and just couldn’t force myself to pay the $55 that the LYS wanted for the designer case they had in stock, so I went to the local Ben Franklin crafts store (akin to a “Michael’s”), who did not have any cheap needle cases, but get this — roaming around the aisle where the painting supplies are sold, (canvases, brushes, oils, acrylics, etc.), I found a white cotton roll-up case for sale that artists use to store their paintbrushes. Perfect!!! And it cost me all of $4.95.
